Individual Case/Term Paper (25% of course grade)

In addition to solving problems, managers must be able to communicate their findings in writing and orally. In recognition of this need, the Graduate School places emphasis on written assignments in all courses. This requirement is reflected in the Accounting and Financial Management courses that include written case analyses, presentations, and term papers. The papers should demonstrate your ability to communicate. This includes proper writing style –organization, grammar, and spelling — as well as integration of course-related material. The term papers also provide links between the text content of the course and the environment in which organizations operate. This is consistent with the applied nature of our programs.

Each student is required to complete a paper during the semester. The paper will be a case situation (Boston Chicken) that the student is required to analyze research and propose recommendations to respond to the issues raised. In addition to the information provided in the text and case write up, the student should conduct independent research using professional and academic journal sources to provide depth to the analysis and add support to the positions taken in the paper. Research for the paper can be conducted online from sources that are listed in the Web Resources page in Course Content, and from those you find on your own.

The paper will be graded for writing style, organization, grammar, and spelling, as well as for analysis and content. The writing style must follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition. Citations for online sources should include the online address (URL) and access date as well as the citation for the specific reference. Be sure your sources are properly cited to avoid any appearance of plagiarism. See the Student Writing Resources Page for further guidelines about form and policies.

Submit your paper for a grade in your Assignments Folder by the due date/time indicated in the course schedule.

Please contact me if you have any questions about your topic and research.

**NOTE: It is recommended that all students begin working on term papers as soon as possible, to ensure that there is sufficient time to do all of the research and writing prior to the deadline.**

Boston Chicken, Inc.

Boston Chicken developed a new segment of the fast food restaurant business, home-cooked food. To take advantage of this innovation the company sought to grow rapidly by signing franchise agreements with large area developers. However, it also provided sizable loans to the developers to help them finance new restaurants. These loans have, in turn, been financed through public stock and convertible debt issues made by Boston Chicken. The case is used as a comprehensive security analysis case, covering strategy analysis, accounting analysis, financial analysis and valuation.

Questions to Guide/Be Addressed in Your Case Analysis:

1. Assess Boston Chicken’s business strategy. What are its critical success factors and risks?

2. How is the company reporting on its performance and risks? What are the key assumptions behind these policies? Do you think that its accounting policies reflect the risks?

3. What adjustments, if any, would you make to the firm’s accounting policies?

4. What questions would you ask management about the company’s performance?

5. How is Boston Chicken performing?

6. What assumptions is the market making about the company’s future performance and risks? Do you agree with those assessments?

See attached excel sheet with financials (separate attachment)

Develop your case analysis as a paper with an introduction, statement of the issues/problems, body/analysis and conclusions/recommendations sections. See scoring template (separate attachment). You may include a post script to your paper, which comments on recent events associated with the company; however, do not let the “Monday morning quarterback” syndrome drive your analysis. Your analysis should be independent of what has transpired after the situation/time period described in the case
