Directions: This is a research assignment based on the play Hamlet. Using at least 7 research sources (including the textbook), find out as much as you can about what literary scholars say about Hamlet’s character. No more than two sources may be Internet literary database sources. All other sources must be researched from a library. Report your findings. In the last two paragraphs, explain your thoughts about the Hamlet’s character.

To help get you started, there are many inconsistencies in Hamlet’s character. Early in the play, Hamlet says the ghost is a “true ghost,” yet doubts the ghost later in the play. Hamlet is mean to Ophelia and tells her, “You should not have believed me…. I loved you not” (111.III.1.117-118). In the graveyard scene, however, he tells Laertes, “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers / Could not with all their quantity of love / Make up my sum” (168.V.2.259-260). There are many more inconsistencies and problems with Hamlet’s character. [Note that the first quotation is in prose and has no forward slashes, but the second quotation, which is in verse, has forward slashes to denote line breaks.] Your findings should explain the Hamlet’s character flaws and what scholars say about these flaws. This composition is a research report and should reflect the ideas and analysis of others more than your own ideas; you are reporting on how literary and Shakespearean scholars explain Hamlet’s character flaws. Use the last two paragraphs to explain your own position or give your own analysis based on your research. The
research is your guide.
You are writing the paper, so keep quotations short and concise and don’t try to let the quoted material write the paper for you. Expected length is 8-10 pages plus a Works Cited page.
Remember: Follow the word processing instructions in the syllabus, and use the MLA format for your paper. Use an MLA guide to help you reference your researched material.
